Learn to sew like the tentmakers of Cairo in this unique educational workshop. The stages and skills of Egyptian khayamiya appliqué will be explained by master craftsman Hany Mahmoud. During the workshop, participants will be introduced to pattern design, shown how to mark and transfer patterns to fabric, and how to sew cotton appliqué by hand in the style of the tentmakers. Some hand-sewing experience is required for this workshop.
Hany Mahmoud is an Egyptian artisan who started his career from a very early age, working as a trainee for his family’s business at the street of khayamiya in Cairo. His career developed from being an assistant artist to an innovative artist when he mastered the appliqué techniques of traditional tent making and could invent a design of his own. His balanced choices of colours and outstanding needlework are unique and have been recognised by his fellow artisans. His works travelled to the US, UK, Australia, Europe and several Arab countries and are part of private collections in Cairo.
Venue: Education Workshop, Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia
