In conjunction with the special exhibition, ‘Islamic Bookbinding’, IAMM is pleased to host a special lecture by Dr. Karin Scheper entitled “Tradition and Innovation: Bookbinding across the Islamic World”.
Recent studies have brought to light that within the tradition, very specific methods, materials and structural elements were used to produce signature bindings. In this lecture, both the traditional and innovative techniques that bookbinders used will be addressed, and as the value of these artefacts will be highlighted, it will become clear how important it is that we understand these items and preserve them for future generations.
The lecture will be presented by Dr. Karin Scheper, one of the leading authorities on Islamic Bookbinding. Over the past years, Karin has carried out extensive research on the Leiden University collection of Islamic manuscripts. The resulting book, The Technique of Islamic Bookbinding (Brill 2015), won her the 2017 De la Court – award of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
