Talk by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mandana Barkeshli : Persian Book Binding : Materials, Tools, Techniques And The Iranian Tradition Of Bookbinding Conservation And Restoration

Bookbinding has always been one of the respected craftsmanship in Persia. Bookbinders’ ateliers can be found in the wing of the marketplace (bāzār) where goldsmiths opened their shops. Since the Safavid period, the profession of bookbinder became so respectable that a special office and title, Chief Bookbinder (ṣaḥḥāf-bāši) were created to supervise the special libraries in royal courts and major religious shrines.

In conjunction with the special exhibition, ‘Islamic Bookbinding’, IAMM would like to invite you to a special talk on Persian Book Binding : Materials, Tools, Techniques And The Iranian Tradition Of Bookbinding Conservation And Restoration by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mandana Barkeshli. This talk will review and discuss the tradition of Persian bookbinding, method of preservation and conservation as practiced for centuries in Iran, and the technical aspect of bookbinding and more.
