Music of the Islamic World (15th -16th September 2018)

Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia will host a two-day event organised by PUSAKA, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the High Commission of Canada in Malaysia. Below are the details of the event:

Public Talk – ‘Music of the Islamic World: An Introduction’

In this talk, Eddin Khoo explores aspects of music in the Islamic World, looking at diverse traditions in light of their historical, socio-cultural, and philosophical contexts. He will also trace how some of these traditions traversed space and time to give rise to new musical forms and expression in the cultural confluence of the Malay Archipelago. This talk will also serve as an introduction to the new concert series, Music of the Islamic World, curated by PUSAKA in partnership with the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia. The inaugural concert for this series, Under the Persian Musical Sky, will take place later the same evening.

A concert featuring Grammy Award-winning kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor

With Kiya Tabassian on setar and Ziya Tabassian on tombak.

Music unquestionably reigns among the stars of Iranian civilisation and, in a phenomenon unique in the Eastern world, this music carries within it the capacity for constant renewal. This musical encounter brings together the incomparable master of this tradition, Kayhan Kalhor, setar virtuoso Kiya Tabassian, and tombak marvel Ziya Tabassian, in their first-ever concert in Kuala Lumpur.

Presented in partnership with PUSAKA, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the High Commission of Canada in Malaysia, and official hotel PNB Perdana Hotel & Suites On The Park.

Music Workshop : A Workshop on Persian Classical Music

With Kayhan Kalhor, Kiya Tabassian, and Ziya Tabassian

World-renowned Persian musicians Kayhan Kalhor, Kiya Tabassian and Ziya Tabassian take participants on a journey through the history and development of Persian classical music, from its ancient origins to its expression in contemporary times. Participants will learn about the instruments, aesthetics, modes and rhythms of Persian music, the fundamentals and techniques of improvisation, as well as connections between the Persian musical tradition and other art forms such as poetry and painting.
