Results & Updates: CALLIGRAPHY COMPETITION (MANIFESTASI PERDANA SENI KHAT 2009 (September - October 2009)

Following the Calligraphy Competition (Manifestasi Perdana Seni Khat 2009) which was recently held at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia last 31st October 2010, a 3 days judging session was held by the judging committees to select the winners. Panel of judges are Ustaz Mohammed Yusof Abu Bakar (Presiden, National Calligraphy Association), Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal (National Art Laureate), Professor Dr. D’zul Haimi Md. Zain (Professor of Fine Arts & Design, Universiti Teknologi Mara) and Ustaz Muhammad Asrak Hj. Mohd. Osman (Arabic Calligraphy Expert).

Winners was announced on Utusan Malaysia on 20th November 2009 and will be contacted by the competition’s secretariat soon on the prize presentation ceremony to be held in December 2009. Calligraphy artworks on canvas for Category B & C that did not make it in this competition can be claimed by the artists at the Education Department, Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia before or latest by 20th February 2010.

CALLIGRAPHY COMPETITION (MANIFESTASI PERDANA SENI KHAT 2009
(September - October 2009)

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) will hold its fourth National Art Calligraphy Competition (Manifestasi Perdana Seni Khat) this 31st October 2009. The calligraphy competition was well received when it was first held at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia in 1999, and subsequently in 2001 and 2003. The competition is a continuous event organised by the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia in association with the National Art Calligraphy Association (Persatuan Seni Khat Kebangsaan) and supported by Kumpulan Utusan, Astro Oasis and Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia (IKIM). This competition is held with the aim of further promoting the talent of our calligraphers from all walks of life, showcasing their skill and creativity. To date, the popularity of the competition has proved that Malaysians, young and old, from different backgrounds, are open to the idea and keen to pursue this hobby to professional standards.

The competition is divided into three (3) main categories:
i.    Category A – Traditional Art Calligraphy Spontaneous on Paper:
-    Participants in this category are given three hours and required to write their art calligraphy during that time. The competition will be held at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia on 31st October 2009 from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
ii.    Category B – Art Calligraphy Painting on Canvas:
-    Participants in this category are required to choose one calligraphy styles from the three styles given (Riq’ah, Thuluth or Naskh).
-    All artworks by participants are required to be submitted to the Islamic Arts Museum before 31st October 2009.
iii.    Category C – Art Contemporary Calligraphy Painting on Canvas
-    Participants in this category may choose calligraphy styles other than those already mentioned in Category B. For example, Kufi, Diwani or Zukhrufah.

The competition is open to adults and students under the age of 18 years old residing in Malaysia. Winners will receive cash prizes of more than RM30,000, a Certificate of Participation and a trophy. The closing date for registration is 30th September 2009.

Divine Inspiration: Seven Principles of Islamic Architecture

In conjunction with the exhibition, “Divine Inspiration: Seven Principles of Islamic Architecture”, the Education Department of Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) is organizing the following competitions as part of its educational activities:

“Show & Tell” Competition

Present your favorite building and tell us why it is your favorite building whether it’s a house you call home or a mega structure building. Competition is open for primary school students aged 7-12 years old with two categories, “Show and Tell” in Bahasa Malaysia or English language. Contestants are given 5 minutes to present.

The competition will take place at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia on 15 February 2009 (Sunday) at 10:30am.

Architecture Pop-Up Book Competition

Calling all “Paper Engineers” out there! Show your talent and imagination of architects and builders within you by joining the Architecture Pop-Up Book Competition. You may select any building to pop-up from all eras or all over the world. Contestants are required to include a short write-up about the building as part of the pop-up book contents. The competition is open for secondary school students aged 13-17 years old.

Presentation and judging will take place at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia on Friday, 6th March 2009 at 10:30am.

Museum Hunt Competition

Date: Sunday, 17th August 2008

The Museum Hunt Competition was organised in conjunction with the “Beyond Orientalism: How the West Was Won Over by Islamic Art Exhibition”. The objective of this programme was to promote the museum as a place for young people, especially students, to have interesting and interactive activities. These students were exposed to unique information about Islamic artefacts that have been admired by the West. Moreover, they will also learn about the role of the museum itself and its staff as the preserver and restorer of Islamic art in Malaysia.

Seven groups with two members in each team participated in this competition.
