ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP / Kursus Seni Khat & Kraf 2010
The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) in collaboration with Persatuan Seni Khat Kebangsaan Malaysia (PSKK) is once again organizing a workshop on Arabic Calligraphy (Kursus Seni Khat & Kraf). These four months of classes is expected to begin on 6th March 2010 under the guidance of PSKK’s professional calligrapher.
The objectives of these workshops are:
* To provide a place for calligraphy’s enthusiast to study and to practice this beautiful handwork of traditional art.
* To introduce one of the Islamic Arts which focusing on graceful art of writing Arabic letters.
* To stimulate calligrapher to produce commercial calligraphy products.

Live Painting Workshop
1 June - 12 June 2009

In conjunction with the 10th Anniversary celebration and A Decade of Dedication at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia Exhibition, a Live Painting Workshop will be organized which will take place during the school term break from 1st to 12th June 2009 (Mondays to Fridays) from 10am - 12 noon.
Under the guidance of IAMM’s in-house artist, Ms. Rekha Verma, participants will go through demonstrations and step-by-step explanation on live painting and watercolor techniques. Participation is open for students and adults aged 15 years and above.

Divine Inspiration: Seven Principles of Islamic Architecture exhibition: Accompanying workshops

In conjunction with the exhibition, the public are invited to participate in workshops conducted by The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia and Prince’s School of Traditional Arts (PSTA).
1. “Art and The Order of Nature”
A Seminar and workshop on the underlying principles of art in the context of Southeast Asia and their development in contemporary setting
Dates: 12 to 14 Feb. 2009 (1st session) OR 17 to 19 Feb. 2009 (2nd session)
Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Fee: RM75 per person (Fee is inclusive of lunch and art materials)
Workshop Description: Should a line be drawn between traditional craft and art? What is the relationship between art and craft and art and life? Are there common principles found in the great traditions of art? What is the role of a museum or an art gallery?
This workshop will explore principles of traditional art and the Order of Nature within the cultural context of Southeast Asia. Participants will be led through discussions and practical exercises on principles of geometry and floral design. They will have a chance to experience the creation of a traditional design through a hands-on activity referencing the arts and crafts of Southeast Asia. This three-day workshop will include visual presentations by Patricia Araneta, Director for Outreach of Prince’s School of Traditional Arts.
Participants will be requested to take with them two images: one of their favourite contemporary pieces of art, the other of a traditional craft of their country or region.
They will also be requested to reflect on and define:
1. Tradition
2. Craft
3. Pattern
4. Beauty
5. Art
The workshop will begin with a visual presentation followed by a seminar. Participants will be asked to make their contribution following the presentation. A discussion on the principles of traditional art and the Order of Nature and their significance in contemporary design will follow.
The second day will be dedicated to exploring the application of principles discussed on Day 1. Participants will be led through discussions and practical exercises on the principles of geometry and biomorphic design.
The third day will begin with a visual presentation demonstrating how traditional art is contemporary. The second part of the day will revolve on the experience of creating a design referencing the arts and crafts of Southeast Asia through a hands-on activity. A work of art will be produced by each participant.
This workshop is recommended for museum managers and staff, designers, architects and university students.
2. Community Workshop with PSTA
Workshop description: A one day workshop where participants will be guided by the PSTA team in creating a design composition using a geometry and floral motifs for a Malay woodcarving and traditional textile or mat.
Date: 15 Feb. 2009
Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Fee: RM25.00 per person (Fee is inclusive of lunch and art materials)
This workshop is recommended for youth and adults.
3. Children’s Workshop with PSTA
Workshop description: In this workshop, children will be guided to draw flowers and motifs from their own imaginations and later translating their drawings to the square-based grid which underlies a traditional textile designs. These individual creations will then be assembled to create a collaborative textile design painted in ink.

Fee: COMPLIMENTARY
This workshop is recommended for children aged 7 to 12 years old.

PERCUSSION AND TARANNUM CLASS 2008
Date: 8th November 2008 – 24th January 2009

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM), in collaboration with nasyid group, Rabbani, is once again organizing the Islamic Arts Appreciation Class with Rabbani (Kelas Kesenian Islam Bersama Rabbani) for this year 2008. The programme was launched at a joint Press Conference last 23rd October 2008 at IAMM.
The objective of this programme is to promote and preserve Islamic Arts form in Malaysia especially among the younger generations with the aim of preserving the uniqueness of Islamic Arts for future generations. This will be the 3rd year IAMM and Rabbani Productions is collaborating in this programme with only Percussion Class as the introduction programme. This year, IAMM and Rabbani Productions for the first time will be introducing Tarannum Class apart from the on-going Percussion Class.

Tarannum is knowledge for Muslims to acquire in order to enhance their Qur’an reciting skills. By attending these classes, one will have the ability to learn the skills of Tarannum such as Bayyati, Hijaz, Nahwan and Rast. With proper guidance from the instructors, participants would be able to master Tarannum techniques and skills.
There will be 12 classes in total, of approximately two hours each. This time around, classes are open for beginners only and the instructors will be introducing a new method of teaching with target number of participants of not more than 30 students per class. More details as below:
