Mission
Artistic and cultural heritage objects worldwide are affected by the conditions in which they exist. None is free from the ravages of time and environment.
In Southeast Asia, in particular, there is a need for suitable conservation facilities with qualified and skilled professionals to conduct concerted efforts to preserve heritage. As an educator and a custodian of Islamic art and crafts for present and future generations, the museum will have to take a key role in conservation, restoration, and preservation of artefacts.
The Conservation Centre provides preservation and conservation services for the museum's artefacts and also for privately owned art and craft objects and collections. Through research and training, the IAMM Conservation Centre furthers knowledge and information management on conservation.
History
The aim of the IAMM as a custodian of Islamic art led to the establishment of a Conservation Department in order to develop a team of professional conservators and restorers capable of dealing with the needs of the collection and with the potential to service other national and international museums and collections. A number of conservation centres were researched and studied before the IAMM embarked on the tasks of setting up its own Conservation Department.
Services
The Conservation Centre provides services in four major areas:
Active conservation and restoration for artefacts of the museum's collections, as well as for clients' art objects and
collections.
Training programmes and workshops to ensure future generations of professionals in the field.
Research on artefacts, their history and conservation materials.
Knowledge and information management on conservation and preservation issues, as well as its dissemination among
the conservation community.
