Al-‘ilm (knowledge) in Islam is guided by the Qur’an and hadith. Through the pursuit of knowledge, Muslims became renowned innovators. Most of these individuals were able to innovate after studying the theories of classical antiquity or through the experience of their own lives. Science and innovation flourished during various golden ages of Islamic history. Under the Abbasids of Iraq, Umayyads of Spain, Fatimids of Egypt, Ottomans of Turkey and Mughals of India, advances formed a solid foundation for engineering, medicine, botany, zoology, weaponry architecture and the visual arts. The Muslims responsible for these advances were often anonymous and lived in a world before patents. Their work was admired, studied and developed by their Western counterparts in a process of refinement and improvement that has continued to the present day.
